Organic cotton fabrics and dyes

It may be difficult to evaluate the environmental and human health impact of dyed fabrics. So, we may try to dye some fabrics. We can purchase undyed organic cotton fabrics from Cotton Plus, Inc. (http://www.organiccottonplus.com/). I have obtained 3 Huntsman dyes (red, blue and yellow) that have been approved by Global Organic Textile Standard (www.global-standard.org/got_standard.htm). What do you hang clothes on?

How many hangers do you have? I just counted and I own 105 hangers. I actually couldn't believe my count, so I tried it again--same result. Could you imagine if every family had 105 hangers each? How much plastic and/or metal waste would that produce? Ditto Hangers has won countless Eco-Design awards for their innovative design ideas. Ditto hangers come in two fabrications: 100% Recycled Premium and 100% Recycled PET (Polyethylene Terephatalate)Plastic. PET is from recycled plastic bottles and the most recycled plastic worldwide.
I felt this relevant to our findings as a means to inspire us to look at the bigger picture. PET is also used in fabrics.

Journey to the EPA!

The 5 of us, along with 2 advisers, have one goal: Sustain. Our idea is to fabricate adaptable and sustainable garments. The adaptable garb will be able to be worn over long periods of time, reducing waste. In order to do this, the clothing will be able to be worn for different occasions (formal or casual), for different seasons, and it will be adjustable to body size (growing smaller or growing larger.) Along with reducing waste, we must also consider how this waste will affect the environment. Therefore, we have been doing textile fabrication research, in order to find sustainable fabrics. From different companies, we have found recycled polyester, buttons made out of natural materials, and even recycled zippers from YKK! We will also be testing out our ideas on human subjects to determine wearability, whether it is aesthetically pleasing, and more! We are all SO pumped to be going to DC in April to present our findings!
